Days 11 & 12

Day 11 was another damp and dreary day and it was well into the evening before it stayed fine long enough for me to go out for a reasonable walk, which meant that I only just scraped over my daily target. Day 12 was very much the same but also very windy, and again most of my steps were done on an evening dog walk once it came fine.

Days 9 & 10

Day 9 turned out to be quite a nice day with plenty of sunshine so a nice dog walk to and round my local park took care of most of that day’s step count. Day 10 was back to rain again though, the fine drizzly stuff that seems to soak through everything – it was too wet to take the dogs far so even though I don’t particularly like going into town I went, and boosted the step count by mooching around the shops. It was fine again by the early evening though, so the dogs finally got a reasonable walk and I managed to exceed the daily target.

Days 7 & 8

Just in case anyone thinks I’ve given up on the challenge because I’ve not updated the blog recently, nothing could be further from the truth – I’m still hitting over 10,000 steps each day. The main reason I’ve not updated things recently is that it’s a bit of a pain connecting the camera to the pc and going through well over two thousand photos every night just to download one, so I’ve waited until I had a quite a lot to download and I’ve done them all at once.
Day 7 was another miserable wet day when it rained most of the time, but I did find a rather quirky way to add to my step count while cleaning round the boss’s bungalow. It’s quite a long bungalow with wood effect lino all through, so when it came to mopping the floor I left the bucket in the kitchen while I mopped the rooms at the far end, meaning every time I wanted to rinse out the mop I had to walk the length of the house to do it, which added a few dozen steps to the total. By early evening the rain had stopped and by 8pm the sun was shining so the dogs finally got a decent walk and I managed to exceed my daily target.

Day 7
Day 8 was yet another wet day but the rain had stopped by the time I left work just after 6pm and by early evening the sun was shining again, so a combination of extra work during the day and a very pleasant evening dog walk made sure that my target was exceeded by more than a thousand steps.

Days 5 & 6

Two days where the weather has been absolutely awful, and with persistent bouts of heavy rain and strong winds it was really too bad during the day to go out properly, so by the time I’d finished work in the evenings my step count was way short of the target. However a couple of long phone calls to friends helped things along a bit, as on each occasion I walked up and down the room while I was talking, and by the time the bedtime dog walks came round it was fine enough to go a bit further than usual so I just about scraped over the 10,000 target.

Day 4

It was a gloriously warm sunny day with lots of blue sky, a day just right for a long dog walk and a bit of local exploration. I’m not saying on here where I went as the walk will probably feature next week in my Mouse House blog as a Monday Walk with plenty of photos, but it was done in two parts and I managed to exceed my 10,000 steps target by quite a substantial amount.

Day 3

With most of the day spent in the garden – the hedges desperately needed trimming and the grass cutting – and just a short trip to Asda, by 9pm I was still well over 4,000 steps short of my target, so as it was a lovely evening and still sunny the dogs got a much earlier than usual bed time walk. I didn’t go anywhere special, just round the local streets and avenues, and I kept on walking until the little man waved his arms at me, finally exceeding the target by 416 steps.

Day 2

The second day where I managed to hit my target without actually going anywhere. By the time I’d finished work in the evening I was still 2,400 steps short of my target, however a walk round the local Asda store on my way home and a bit-longer-than-usual bed time dog walk made sure that I exceeded the target by 328 steps, and the little man in the corner was very happy.

June 1st 2017 – Day 1 – The Challenge begins

The first day of my 30-day step challenge and I thought it was going to be a not-very-good start. The weather was glorious and I’d fully intended to take the dogs for a long walk in the afternoon but a good friend put paid to that idea. She’s been going through a bit of a tough time recently and needed to bend someone’s ear about it, which just happened to be mine, and I spent so long at her house that I hadn’t time to go where I’d first planned. However, with the three short close-to-home dog walks which I did do, plus all my walking about at work, I managed to hit the 10,000 steps target and the little man in the corner of my step counter waved his arms to congratulate me. So here it is, 10,214 steps on my first day without really going anywhere –

The first ‘step’ of many

Having two lively little dogs you can almost guarantee that at some stage of each day I’ll be out walking with them – long walks when the weather is sunny, shorter walks when it’s not, and very brief walks if it’s pouring down. My work also entails a fair amount of walking about and added to the dog walking that’s quite a substantial amount of steps in a day, so when I saw the Cancer Research ‘Walk All Over Cancer’ ad I thought “I could do that”. 10,000 steps every day seems like a very attainable target to me but I’m not daft enough to think it will be so simple – it may be harder than I think. There could be any number of reasons why my daily step count may occasionally fall short of the target but if it does I can make it up by walking extra steps on another day. In the memory of my son’s dad I’m determined to do this – his story is on my fundraising page – so failure is not an option.
So I’ve taken the first ‘step’ in this challenge and set up my fundraising page, sent off for some sponsorship forms, and ordered one of those gizmos for counting steps and measuring distance etc – now all I really have to do is wait for the beginning of June and keep my fingers crossed for some decent weather for my dog walks. I’ll be posting regular updates on here – that’s what this blog is for – and if anyone wants to leave a comment then please feel free to do so. After all, ‘likes’ are nice but comments are nicer  🙂
